"Just do it ! differently" is the motto of the German Chemnitz Linux Days, which will take place virtually on March 13 and 14, 2021. The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) Central Europe is taking this motto to heart and is also breaking new ground at the CLT. For the first time, discounted online exams will be offered at the virtual booth and the Linux Essentials Day will celebrate its premiere. There will also be an online quiz with great prizes.
Linux Essentials Day on March 13 is a workshop series for Linux and open source beginners. LPI has recruited a number of experts to share their knowledge and personal experiences from their day-to-day work and training. From 10 am to 3 pm, they will go through the five learning fields of LPI's basic Linux Essentials exam in an entertaining and comprehensible way, bringing them to life with real-world examples:
Topic 1: The Linux Community and a Career in Open Source
Mark Swillus, a GNU/Linux and Free Software enthusiast for about ten years, will discuss open source philosophy, licensing and career opportunities in his workshop. Mark studied computer science and worked as a software developer with and on open source projects for several years. He is particularly interested in the community, the people and the philosophy of free software and is therefore the ideal person to introduce the workshop participants to learning area 1 "The Linux community and careers in the open source environment.
Workshop content: We can use free and open source software such as Linux or Firefox without having to worry about third-party companies and usage rights. We are even allowed to explore, modify and redistribute them. But why does this work at all and why is this not only important for us users, but also for our society? Look forward to a tour through the turbulent history of Linux and Open Source and to suggestions on how you can become part of the community yourself. We will start at 10 am.
Topic 2: Finding Your Way on a Linux System
Dirk Streubel works as a Linux consultant and trainer at B1 Systems GmbH, focusing on directory services (LDAP/Samba/FreeIPA). For some time now, he has been working on virtualization under Linux and is also active for LPI in various areas. He will share his knowledge about Linux in his workshop.
Workshop content: Dirk will introduce the basics of the command line and how to use the help system. Furthermore he will teach the basics of directories and files and how to create, move and delete them. Who likes, can participate parallel in the Bash. It starts at 10.45 am.
Topic 3: The Power of the Command Line
The command line is powerful and so is the knowledge of Michael Gisbers and Kai Schell. Michael has been involved with Linux since 1994. First as a user, but later as an administrator and professional consultant. Since 2004 he is LPI certified and founded his own company Linux-Schmie.de in 2008. He is active in the Linux community and is chairman of the OpenRheinRuhr e.V. The ORR has been organizing annual events on the topic of open source since 2008. In the rest of his free time he organizes a Linux User Group in Oberhausen and supports the LPI by volunteering at events and exam development.
Kai has been active for LPI Central Europe for ten years and takes care of the technical infrastructure and the maintenance and further development of the websites. He passes on his enthusiasm for Linux and Open Source in his work as an IT trainer and can be found as proctor, quizmaster and contact person at the LPI booth at the CLT for many years.
Workshop content: Michael and Kai show the participants how to archive files and directories on Linux based systems with simple commands. And they explain why it makes little sense to use the commands known from other operating systems. Participants who want to actively participate should have an installed Linux distribution ready on which the commands 'tar', 'gzip', 'gunzip', 'zip' and 'unzip' are available. The event will start at 11.30 am.
Topic 4: The Linux Operating System
Harald Maaßen is an IT lecturer and author of the books LPIC-1 and LPIC-2 to prepare for the LPI certification exams. He knows the Linux operating system inside out and will share his know-how with the workshop participants in a familiar and friendly manner.
Workshop content: Harald will inform about the choices of Linux operating systems, give an understanding of computer hardware and explain where data can be stored. The computer in the network will also be a topic. If you want to participate, you can do so with a computer with any Linux distribution. The event starts at 1 pm.
Topic 5: Security and File Permissions
Franz Knipp first came into contact with Linux 26 years ago while studying at the Vienna University of Technology, and he has long been an authority in this field. After graduation, he was drawn to software development for Internet applications, where he was responsible for integrating a range of open source solutions, from web servers to email systems. Later, he specialized in application development in JavaScript. Since 2013, he has been passing on his accumulated knowledge in the field of Linux and software development to students at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland. For the past year, Franz has been setting up the new Software Engineering and Networked Systems degree program at the Pinkafeld campus.
Workshop content: Linux is considered a very secure operating system, which is mainly due to the UNIX security concept. In the workshop, Franz will go into how users and their rights are managed in Linux, answering questions such as: Which users are currently logged in? When was a user last logged in? How can I create new users? How can I restrict and allow access to my files and directories? The event starts at 2 pm.
